# QR codes for retail stores

> Retail QR codes work best where a customer is already holding a decision: shelf-edge labels for product detail, fitting-room codes for size availability, and receipt codes for reviews. Store-window codes underperform because nobody stops.

## Placement, in order of measured value

1. **Shelf edge** — product detail, reviews, "find my size". The customer is deciding right
   now.
2. **Fitting room** — request another size without getting dressed. This is the highest-value
   retail QR use and almost nobody does it.
3. **Receipt** — [Google review](/google-review-qr-code), returns portal, loyalty signup.
4. **Out-of-stock shelf tag** — order online for delivery. Recovers a sale that was otherwise lost.
5. **Window** — works only after closing, and only if it says so.

## Shelf-edge specifics

- **1.5–2 cm** of code at a 30–50 cm reading distance; shelf-edge strips are small, so keep
  the payload short.
- Thermal-printed strips: check **dots per module** (203 dpi means modules of at least
  0.5 mm — see [labels](/qr-codes-on/labels)).
- Encode a **product id you resolve server-side**, not a long URL. Shorter payload, coarser
  code, better read rate on a scuffed strip.

## Sunrise 2027 and GS1 Digital Link

Retail is migrating from the 1D barcode to 2D at point of sale. A
[GS1 Digital Link](/glossary/gs1-digital-link) URL carries the GTIN, batch and expiry in the
path, so one code serves both the till and the consumer. If you are re-doing shelf labels or
packaging now, encode a Digital Link rather than a bare URL.

## What not to do

A code on the window at eye level pointing at your homepage is the most common retail QR
code and the least useful. If you use the window, point it at something only useful when
closed: ordering, opening hours, a booking link.
